Jewell Island
Jewell Island is a choice spot for a day of adventure or an overnight camping trip. This island is located about 8 miles from Portland Harbor and can only be reached by private boat or charter. The ferry does not run to Jewell Island. Jewell Island runs parallel to Cliff Island and boasts beautiful views from all angles. The island is 221 acres and contains a trail network and many historic sites. During World War II it was used for the Jewell Island Military Reservation. There are towers and batteries throughout the island as well as some ruins. The island is rumored to be haunted by both soldiers and pirates.
Jewell Island has a network of trails about three miles in length. The trails weave through the island and along the coast. Boats typically anchor in cocktail cove. As you go ashore the rocky beach there are stone steps leading up to the trail. There are multiple campsites that are first come first serve. The island is carry in carry out. It is beautifully maintained thanks to the keeper and responsible patrons. There are outhouses near cocktail cove along the trail. If you are staying the night learn from our mistake and pick your campsite before you unpack and anchor the boat. The camp set up can be somewhat strenuous so pack as light as possible as you will be transporting your equipment up the stone steps down the trail to the campsites. Fires are allowed only in the designated fire pits at each campsite.
On our day trips and camping trips to Jewell Island it has never been quite hot enough for us to really swim but the East side of the Island hosts the Punchbowl. The Punchbowl is a large beach area with essentially a huge tide pool that would be great for swimming or searching for treasures. Kids love this part of the island and you could probably make a whole day out of hanging out on the Punchbowl. We have found old buoys and lobster traps. There are plenty of ocean creatures to observe including hermit crabs. We love searching for sea glass. If you have little ones or even if you are a curious adult the Punchbowl is a must see while on Jewell Island.
The Island is also great for an easy hike. The trail network is about 3 miles total with multiple different routes you can take. There are military towers that can be ascended (although watch out for bird poop and lots of it). However, the top of the towers do provide fantastic views of Casco Bay so it is worth it to brave the bird droppings. There is also an interesting battery that can be both fun and a little eerie. The battery is covered by trees and is dark so bring a flashlight for exploring. The trails will also weave through other military ruins and the ruins of a farmhouse. With plenty to see and easy flat trails this hike is great for everyone.
Packing appropriately can make a day trip on the island. First to consider is clothing. Whenever you take a boat you should layer clothing because the temperature can change quickly on the water. We recommend always having a light jacket or sweater. Bathing suits are a good idea for unloading the boat and for anyone that may want venture into the water. The outhouses usually have some toilet paper but it is always a good idea to bring some along just in case. Snacks and beverages are always important as well as plenty of water. Bring a small backup or bag for treasure hunting with the kids.
At just 8 miles from Portland Jewell Island somehow feels remote and wild. The views are breathtaking and the trail network is full of historic structures. This is a great trip to relax and leisurely hike. This can also be a great adventure for young ones to do a scavenger hunt and explore the tide pool.
