Little ChebeaGue Day TrIP

A Little Chebeague day trip is one of the best ways to spend a hot summer day in Casco Bay.  The cruise from Portland Harbor to Little Chebeague Island is less than 45 minutes. The island can only be reached by private boat or by walking from Chebeague Island through the sand bar at low tide. The sandbar spans approximately ½ a mile.

This little gem is 100 acres of uninhabited land. The island is well maintained by MITA. There are easy walking trails that weave throughout the island. Along the trails are historic military sites. There are also ruins of a cottage colony. Prior to World War II this island was a private summer retreat for multiple families. In 1943 the United States Navy took over the island for a training site during the war. The island also provided an area for recreation for the military that were anchored in Casco Bay. There are signs with facts about the island’s history throughout the trails. It is a quick and easy hike that is fun for kids and adults.

There are two beach areas you can anchor for the day. The beach on the East side of the island is larger and more popular. The bathroom is located on this side which is very convenient for everyone. The beach on the west side tends to be less popular but is a great spot for hunting for treasures and is an easy walk to the sandbar.

There are also campsites available with picnic tables and firepits. The campsites are first come first serve. They are set up perfectly for an overnight adventure. We have also used the campsites for a picnic lunch. Don’t forget the camera as this is a great spot for some family photos and the views of the coastline are beautiful! Little Chebeague is perfect for a picnic lunch, sea glass hunting, and swimming.
